Moonfleet is a tale of smuggling by the English novelist J. Meade Falkner, first published in 1898. The book was extremely popular among children worldwide up until the 1970s, mostly for its themes of adventure and gripping storyline. It remains a popular story widely read and is still sometimes studied in schools. The novel is set in a fishing village in Dorset during the mid 18th century. The story concerns a 15 year old orphan boy, John Trenchard, who becomes friends with an older man who turns out to be the leader of a gang of smugglers.

Moonfleet is a classic coming of age story that spans John Trenchard’s life from childhood through adulthood. John is being raised by a cold and critical aunt, while he loves to wander at night dreaming of treasure and contraband runners. When he sneaks out one night to explore a cave-in and passageway under the local graveyard that he has discovered, he doesn’t know that it will change his life forever. Not only does his aunt kick him out of her house for being out at night, but he’s taken in by Elzevir Block, a kind innkeeper who mourns his murdered boy. John find himself loved as a son by this warm-hearted man, but also pulled into a world rife with smuggling and its consequences. When a hateful magistrate schemes to force Elzevir out of his inn, it begins a cascade of events that has Elzevir and John running for their lives. Little does John know that, even as they flee, he holds the key to Blackbeard’s treasure and wealth beyond his imagining. Circumstances will align for him to solve the code and discover where Blackbeard hid a fabulous diamond. Will the evil of the treasure follow them and ruin all their hopes?Moonfleet is a tale that will capture the imagination of children who enjoy stories such as Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, and Swiss Family Robinson. It’s a harsh tale with a lot of darkness, but a lot of life lessons, and in the end, there is hope for a good life. It’s written in more formal English, given that it is an older story. That said, the vocabulary is not horrendously difficult, but some words will have young readers checking their dictionary. Here is a short example passage that demonstrates the style of writing at its more convoluted (it’s not always as this complex):
“Oh, fool me not!” I cried out, chafing at his excuses. “I am not wandering now. ‘Twas Elzevir that saved me in the surf last night. ‘Twas he that landed with me.”
There was a look of sad amaze that came on Ratsey’s face when I said that; a look that woke in me an awful surmise. “What!” cried he. “Was that Master Elzevir that dragged thee through the surf?”
A classic tale of pirates, greed, and consequences in a harsher time. Recommended for those that love historical novels, tales of pirate treasure, and coming of age stories.

Ian Fleming loved this book as a boy.It is full of adventure. Because of that I wanted to read it I was surprised how easy it was to read and how enjoyable it was.There is smuggling and the tale and the treasure of Blackbeard the Pirate.As a grown man I enjoyed it but I can see how young boys yearning for adventure would find it thrilling.
I decided to try this book after stumbling across Chris De Burgh's marvellous album, "Moonfleet Bay," a musical adaptation of the novel. What a wonderful work of literature! I wish I had discovered this as a young adult. Beautiful writing, veny evocative and action-filled, with extremely memorable characters. Elzavir Block is one of the truly great heroes of literature. A musical based on this book (and the album) would be as good as "Les Mis," but with even better songs! If you like adventure tales, and don't mind the rhythm and lyrical writing of the period, check out "Moonfleet." (The album is available on as an MP3 download.)
This book was written in the 1800's, in an area of England I used to live in as a child. I read it in the mid-60's when I lived in England; read it again in the mid-70's as a college student; and read it again a month or so ago (late-2018). I've thoroughly enjoyed it each and every time. You won't be disappointed...
This book is very special to me as I read it first in winter while snuggled in the top room of a fishermen's cottage on the Island of Portland in southern England just a few miles down the Chesil Beach referred to in the book from Moonfleet. The surf was up and the undertow and grinding roar of the pebbles could be heard through the wind and rain in my little - skylight room. On a good sunny day I could open the skylight and look at the sea, it almost seemed like it was level with me even though the courage was a good 400 feet or more above the sea level.
I visited Moonfleet during those days and I was transported back to the ancient way of life of the 1700's and what it must have been like to live then. Also the sadness of Elzevir and the love and close, special relationship that developed between he and John - made all the more poignant by their shared losses and shared need of family. A great story, a great plot and lots of sea faring language we still use today yet have lost the origins and meanings! To me, this is a better story than treasure Island.
John is a teenager trying to find his way. He lives in Moonfleet, where one of the main occupations is smuggling goods. He wants to make something of himself, and one night he goes hunting for treasure. What he ends up with is the beginning of an adventure he'll never forget. He also has feelings for a young woman named Grace, who is the daughter of an important man in town.
The story started out a little slow in my opinion. It felt like John kept saying "this is the moment that changed my life" but I didn't necessarily see why until later. After the slow start, I found that I enjoyed the story. I would label it bittersweet overall, but there is a happy ending in there eventually. There's a lot of sadness and bad choices to get through first.
I'm not usually a treasure story kind of person, but this one was really interesting. I'd never heard of it before but was glad I found it.
John Meade Falkner turns out to be a highly talented writer. His biography indicates that he was gifted in so many areas. In some ways, this is a pity since it meant that his novel output is limited to three books. It is surprising that he did not become better known as an author but perhaps his major role as chairman of Armstrong Whitworth prevented that.
All that aside, Moonfleet is a cleverly crafted story with well-drawn characters and a consistent atmosphere of mystery. It will remain in my memory for a long time. I am proceeding to read his entire novel output; not an arduous task.
